چکیده

Tanneries generate wastewater in the range of 30 to 35L kg skin/hide processed with high salinity, high oxygen demand, high organic loading and a high salt content one of which is chromium which spoils the agricultural land and pollute the ground water. In the present investigation, the bacterial strains were isolated from the contaminated soil which was collected from in and around the tannery waste contaminated site. Previously grown indigenous bacterial culture was transferred into 100 ml nutrient broth containing different concentrations of hexavalent chromium (100ppm, 200ppm, 300ppm, 400ppm, 500ppm, 600ppm and 700ppm). These were incubated for 72 hours in facultative conditions. The blanks were also maintained in same conditions without bacterial inoculation. Samples were collected from this experiment to evaluate hexavalent chromium at different time intervals (0hr, 12hrs, 24hrs, 36hrs, 48hrs, 60hrs and 72hrs). From the results it was inferred that the higher bacterial growth was observed at 48 hrs and the maximum chromium reduction was observed upto 500ppm, it was reduced at percentage of 90.40. The isolated microorganisms were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis.

Investigation of the Efficiency of Various Concentration of Organic Compounds in the Bioaugmentation Process for Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium in Soil

Background: Cr (VI) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic contaminant and that are used in the steel industry and other chemical industries such as the leather industry, pigment production, electroplating of metals and the production of anticorrosive compounds. Its waste enters the environment and subsequently enters the water and food sources. Therefore, in order to protect the environment as wel...

Hexavalent chromium reduction by aerobic heterotrophic bacteria indigenous to chromite mine overburden

Microbiological analysis of overburden samples collected from chromite mining areas of Orissa, India revealed that they are rich in microbial density as well as diversity and dominated by Gram-negative (58%) bacteria. The phenotypically distinguishable bacterial isolates (130) showed wide degree of tolerance to chromium (2-8 mM) when tested in peptone yeast extract glucose agar medium. Isolates...

Biodegradation potential of bacterial isolates from tannery effluent with special reference to hexavalent chromium

The application of isolated bacterial culture as biological tool for hexavalent chromium removal from tannery industry waste water was investigated. A number of bacteria tolerant to high levels of chromate (>400μgml) were isolated from tannery effluents. These isolates showed varying degree of Cr (VI) reduction under oxic and anoxic conditions at room temperature. Ten isolates were found to be ...

Hexavalent chromium reduction by bacteria from tannery effluent.

Chromium is generated from several industrial processes. It occurs in different oxidation states, but Cr(III) and Cr(VI) are the most common ones. Cr(VI) is a toxic, soluble environmental contaminant. Some bacteria are able to reduce hexavalent chromium to the insoluble and less toxic Cr(III), and thus chromate bioremediation is of considerable interest. An indigenous chromium-reducing bacteria...
